Learn how to use Notably

Recording

Capture audio from your microphone and system with one click

Starting a Recording

Start recording audio in two ways:

  • Click the red record button in the main window
  • Use the keyboard shortcut (default: ⌘N)

You can customize the keyboard shortcut in Settings → General

Audio Capture

Notably captures audio from multiple sources:

Microphone Audio

Records from your selected microphone or audio input device. Configure the input device in Settings → Audio.

System Audio (macOS only)

Captures audio from applications like Zoom, Teams, or any other app playing audio on your Mac.

System audio capture requires screen recording permission. macOS will prompt you to grant this permission when you first start a recording.

During Recording

While recording is active, you'll see:

  • Duration display: Shows elapsed recording time
  • Real-time transcription: If enabled in Settings, see transcription appear as you speak
  • Audio level indicator: Visual feedback of microphone input

Stopping Recording

End your recording using either method:

  • Click the stop button in the recording interface
  • Use the same keyboard shortcut to toggle off (⌘N by default)

Auto-Save

Recordings are saved automatically when you stop recording. Each recording receives a timestamp-based title by default (e.g., "Recording 2025-12-15 14:30"). You can rename recordings later from the recording list.

Recording List

Access all your recordings from the main window:

Organization

  • Recordings sorted by date, newest first
  • Each entry shows title, duration, and creation date
  • Search recordings by title using the search bar
  • Filter recordings by date range or tags

Management

  • Rename: Click on a recording title to edit
  • Delete: Remove recordings you no longer need
  • Bulk actions: Select multiple recordings to delete or export at once

Playback

Click any recording to open the playback interface:

  • Play/Pause: Control playback with spacebar or play button
  • Time display: See current position and total duration
  • Seek controls: Click timeline to jump to specific moments
  • Segment navigation: If transcribed, click transcription segments to jump to that point in audio
  • Playback speed: Adjust speed from 0.5x to 2x
